Gionee S11 Lite Key Specs & Features

One good thing about the phone is the stylish appearance. Gionee has given the S11 Lite a 3D glass finish on the rear and combined with the curved design, the phone looks stunning. Do keep in mind that the glossy back is a smudge magnet and within a week of usage, we noticed it picked up scratches as well - you need to use it with a case.

On the front is a 5.7-inch IPS display with an 18:9 aspect ratio. The trouble is that it has an HD resolution of 1440 x 720 pixels while phones cheaper by several thousands offer full HD displays now. The display in itself has no issues - good brightness levels, wide viewing angles and rich colours.

In the camera department, you get a rear dual camera setup: 13MP + 2MP and a portrait mode that adds depth to the photos. The photos are impressive in terms of sharpness and colour, but the edge detection in bokeh mode is not as good as the competition. Moreover, just switching to the bokeh mode takes between 2-3 seconds. At this price, one can forgive a slight shutter lag in bokeh photos, but a wait time of 2-3 seconds just switching between camera modes is something Gionee needs to fix. Video recording is limited to 1080p resolution which is again a letdown when you compare it with competition phones offering 4k video recording.

The front camera has been one of the strengths of Gionee smartphones and the S11 Lite is no different. It has a 16MP front camera which takes good quality images. There is a front bokeh mode too, but it fails to impress - it did a poor job with detecting edges and in our opinion is best left unused.

We have some other issues with the S11 Lite as well. First, it runs on the old Android 7.1.1 and comes loaded with bloatware apps. Second, the volume output from the loudspeaker is surprisingly low. Last, it does not offer a dedicated microSD slot for storage expansion - a feature that many budget phone buyers now want.

As mentioned earlier in the review, the Gionee S11 Lite seems like a phone which is stuck in 2017. You're getting a 720p HD display, entry-level processor and older version of Android. For the same price, the RealMe 1 offers a 5.99-inch full HD display, 6GB RAM, 128GB storage, bigger battery, superior front and rear camera and latest Android with Face Unlock and AI features. If you want a dual rear camera, you can also go for the new Motorola G6 - it costs the same, offers twice the storage and has a rear dual camera
